BBL Season 2024: The 10th Season Of Big Bash Will Be Explosive! Big Changes, Cool Contracts, And Exciting Drafts! The popular Australian T20 league is kicking off preparations for its milestone 10th season (WBBL) and 14th season (BBL) with some exciting changes.
Player nominations for the draft are officially open, and there’s a lot to unpack for fans and aspiring cricketers alike.
More Picks, More Overseas Players
This year’s draft promises more action with clubs allowed to select up to four players, compared to three previously. This means all four rounds of the draft will be utilized.

One of these picks can be used as an overseas replacement player if a primary international player becomes unavailable during the tournament.
Securing Stars: The Pre-Signing Advantage
A brand new feature is the ability for clubs to pre-sign an overseas player on a multi-year deal (up to three years). This is designed to address the challenge of limited international player availability.
Each club can sign one overseas player for both the men’s and women’s teams, allowing them to skip the draft and secure their top choice directly.
More Games, Less Travel for Women
The women’s competition is also getting a revamp. The WBBL season has been streamlined, reducing the number of matches from 56 to 40.
This caters to the increasingly crowded women’s international calendar, including the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and new leagues like the Women’s Premier League in India.
The Battle for T20 Supremacy
The Big Bash isn’t the only T20 league vying for international stars. Leagues in England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe are also offering attractive options.
To combat this, the WBBL is making pre-signed players available for the entire season, including the finals. This aims to prevent a repeat of previous seasons where international players left midway to join other leagues.

The Draft Order and Next Steps
The Big Bash draft order will be determined through a weighted lottery next month. While the full schedule is yet to be released, expect the WBBL to kick off shortly after the Women’s T20 World Cup in October.
