After 33 years, Sunil Gavaskar returned the land to the Maharashtra government, took the decision after not being able to build a cricket academy

New Delhi, Online Desk. The trust of former India captain and great batsman Sunil Gavaskar has offered to return 21,348 square feet of land to Maharashtra Housing. And Area Development Authority (MHADA). The land is located in Bandra and 33 years ago it was given to Sunil Gavaskar Cricket Foundation Trust (SGCFT). This land was given to him to make a cricket academy. He had to start working for the academy in three months and was to complete it in three years. But it did not happen. Now when Sunil Gavaskar has said to return it after 33 years.

Gavaskar enlisted the help of great batsman Sachin Tendulkar for a joint venture

In 2019, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority sent a proposal to obtain the possession of the plot. After that, Gavaskar enlisted the help of great batsman Sachin Tendulkar for a joint venture. And both met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Later, two cricket giants were asked by the Maharashtra Housing. And Area Development Authority to look into the possibility of setting up an academy at Bandra’s plot.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority issued a request for the return of the plot. On which Gavaskar wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and State Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad, expressing consent. Stating that he was according to the plan. Cricket Academy is unable to build and hence they are returning the land.
