After all, how did the Australian management give permission to ‘Steve Smith’ to open? Smith himself revealed

Star Australian batsman Steve Smith was recently named the new Australian opener in Tests. Smith will replace long-time opening batsman David Warner. Warner retired from the format after the Test series against Pakistan in the beginning of this month i.e. January 2024.

Steve Smith made a big revelation about his open :-

Veteran batsman Smith has revealed that his desire to open the batting for the national team came into focus during the Ashes series against England last year. This idea first came to his mind when Warner hinted at a possible retirement from Test cricket.

Despite this initial thinking, Smith’s proposal to officially take up the role of opening batsman came to light only recently when the team arrived in Perth for the series against Pakistan. The 34-year-old cricketer Smith presented his concept to the national selection committee, which also included men’s team coach Andrew McDonald. It was a significant moment in Smith’s 13-year Test career.

Smith said to cricket.com.au :-

“I’ve been pushing for it for a few weeks, even before Perth, and I might have thrown it into England without even thinking,” Smith told cricket.com.au.

Smith further said :-

Smith continued “In Perth I said ‘I’m really keen to go there after David’s performance’ and I don’t think the selectors took me seriously until I got to Sydney.

“I was looking forward to getting on top and facing the new ball and they were like ‘We’ll take it under advisement and see how it all looks.’ They were obviously very keen to bring Cameron Green into the team. I’ve played a long time and I’m an experienced player, and I think it’s something I should do.”
