BCCI President’s term extension: BCCI reaches Supreme Court for immediate action on constitutional amendment

BCCI President Tenure Extension: BCCI has filed a petition in the Supreme Court for an early hearing to amend its constitution. The Chief Justice of India said that if possible, it will be heard next week. Actually, BCCI wants changes in many of its rules. If the Supreme Court decides against the BCCI in this matter, then the tenure of Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah will end.

BCCI wants some changes

At present, Sourav Ganguly is the President of BCCI, Jay Shah is Secretary, Rajiv Shukla is Vice President and Arun Dhumal is Treasurer. Jayesh George is the Joint Secretary. According to the constitution of BCCI recognized by the Supreme Court. The tenure of many of these officers has expired. On the basis of a petition filed in 2020. Those officers are still playing their role, whose term has just ended.

The constitution was amended without the permission of the Supreme Court

The Annual General Meeting is held every year on the third Saturday and Sunday of September as per the BCCI constitution. This time elections will also be held. In the last meeting (2019), the board amended the constitution without the permission of the Supreme Court. This time the board has approached the Supreme Court to implement its new constitution.

Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah will have to step down

In the new constitution, the board wants that if a person completes two terms only on the post of chairman and secretary of the board. Then only he will have to cool off for three years. The term of the State Board has not been included in the new constitution. If these amendments are not made in the Supreme Court. Then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah will have to step down from their posts. Earlier, Sourav Ganguly was the President of Cricket of Bengal Association and Jay Shah was working as Joint Secretary of Gujarat Cricket Association.

The new constitution does not require approval from the Supreme Court

In the BCCI constitution passed by the Supreme Court, the constitution is amended only after the vote of the members in the Annual General Meeting. But even after this, the board has to take the permission of the Supreme Court, to implement the new change. According to the new constitution, the permission of the Supreme Court will not be required.

According to the new constitution, others including the CEO will report to the secretary

The rules for going to the ICC have also been changed in the new constitution. According to the present constitution, no leader, government official, MP or MLA can be an officer of the board. A member of a committee, a member of the governing council, and the ICC cannot be represented. Now in the new constitution that has been made, MPs, MLAs and other sports federations have been exempted from this. The power of the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of BCCI has been reduced in the new constitution, whereas earlier his power was maximum. According to the new constitution, others including the CEO will report to the secretary.
