The return of Ben Stokes to the England set-up is good news on many levels. but left-arm spinner Jack Leach will be the one person most happy with.
Jack Leach, who famously allied with Ben Stokes at the dramatic conclusion of the Headingley Test in 2019. hasn’t played a Test in the last English season. (he hasn’t played at home since the 2019 Ashes) largely balanced the side. because of the difficulty. Ben Stokes was absent.
England tried to find a solution by recalling Moeen Ali in addition to the first Test against India. But still dismissed Jack. Jack Leach’s Test record is more reliable – 62 wickets at 29.98 in 16 matches. He took 12 wickets at 25.83 in the last Ashes – 11 of which have come overseas.

Bringing Ben Stokes straight back into Tests at the Gabba would be a gamble given the lack of preparation. Although rain has made it a point for many players – Leach’s fortunes are closely tied to his appearance.
“Ben’s coming back is a big encouragement for all of us. It really supports things when it comes to balance and is probably good news for the spin department,” Leach said. “The retaliation from the summer was that not being in Stokes’ side. Because of that all-rounder option in the top-order, made it harder for me to get into the side.”
“Hadn’t been playing over the summer. I was thinking about this series, So I think the readiness is underway. And now it’s about getting out there and doing it.”
Leach expects to have plenty of bowling in addition to the constrained build-up that has restricted England to 29 overs of play so far.
The other dynamic in the game concerning Leach’s place in the team is bad weather and what it could mean for the Gabba wicket, although Shane Warne would laugh at the sense of not playing a spinner.
It is the bounce introduced in Brisbane that can be of turning importance – a factor that can extend to places beyond the Gabba – and Leach has noted how Nathan Lyon has the potential to build a thriving career.
“Over the years I have watched Nathan Lyon and he is very productive in how he goes about his business,” he said. “How firm their stock ball is on wickets that don’t necessarily request spin-wise, they’ve found ways to bounce, dip, and everything else.
There’s a lot of over-spin from them and they are the kind of things I am trying to add, but trying to stick to my power. You take a little bit out of everyone you play against.”
A central objective of England’s victory in 2010–11 was the role of Graeme Swann, whose 15-wicket haul at 39.80 may seem normal, but he won the Test in Adelaide on the final day and gave only 2.72 per over, which meant the scoreboard was blown away. Rarely found. At a distance.
Leach can also draw some introspection from the role played by Ravindra Jadeja in India’s previous two tours of Australia and Keshav Maharaj and Paul Harris for South Africa.
“I don’t think he [Jadeja] did much differently than what he did in India,” Leach said. “It’s another cool thing to see. He has taken what he has done, doing very similar things and achieving success. I also take a lot of self-confidence from bowling in England against Australia in 2019.
“It’s good to see solid left-handers who have found success. Offspin is completely different, [it’s still] finger spinners but bowling right and left-handed in different parts of the pitch. “

While the seamer’s friendly Dasha may not play in Jack Leach’s favor – the second Test is in Adelaide with the pink ball lights on – he could see much more than the silver lining.
“I went out to dinner with Brody and Anderson the other day and afterward someone came out and said ‘I just want to wish you all the best at the Gabba’.
Then he said ‘It’s going to be a green seamer’ and I was thinking, can’t believe this is the best sled for two of England’s greatest bowlers ever, so I think they were very happy with that. “
