Big Change in South Africa’s Test Captaincy, Squad Announced for Series Against West Indies

There was a major change in the leadership group of the South African cricket team. Dean Elgar has been replaced as Test captain by Temba Bavuma. He will also take charge of the ODI team but will not captain the T20 team. Bavuma will take over the leadership role from the home Test series against the West Indies.

Dean Elgar was appointed Test captain of South Africa in 2021. His captaincy had an impressive start and the Proteas team won the first four Test series under his captaincy. Including the series against India. However, this was followed by defeats in South Africa in England and Australia.

Commenting on the Change in the Leadership Group, CSA Director of Cricket Enoch Enquay said,

Cricket South Africa would like to welcome Temba as the new captain of the South African men’s national team. He is a player with vast captaincy experience both domestically and internationally, having led both ODI and T20I teams since March 2021.

South Africa Made Many Changes in the Test Squad

Several changes have been made in the South African Test team after losing the last two series. Rassie van der Dussen has been left out of the squad while opening batsman Sarel Irvie has been informed. That he is no longer part of the plans for the Test format. Aiden Markram, who was dropped against England, has returned. Theunis de Bruyne was also told that he is not part of the plans as of now and perhaps that is why he announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Tony De Zorzi, who has been selected in the Test squad for the first time, is currently the highest run-scorer in the CSA four-day Division 1 series with 489 runs, including an unbeaten 304 not out. There is also the return of Senuran Muthusamy, who last played in 2019, while Keegan Pietersen also returns after recovering from a hamstring injury.
