MS Dhoni’s choice to bat higher up the order in the 2011 ODI World Cup final is still one of the most talked-about incidents in the tournament’s history. Meanwhile, on the occasion of the release of the World Cup 2023 schedule today, Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan gave his opinion. He also talked about Dhoni’s strategy to elevate himself in the 2011 World Cup. Muralitharan said he was well aware that Indian skipper Dhoni himself would come out to bat after a batsman lost his wicket.

Muralitharan further said :-

He reminded me that Dhoni had spent a lot of time with Muralitharan playing in the nets for Chennai Super Kings and thus was aware of Murali’s technique, which led him to bat higher up the order. The reason for this was that Yuvraj was not comfortable playing me. Yuvraj was the best player in the World Cup at that time. In the middle order, I was at number four in the middle order and I knew Dhoni knew very well how to play me.
