BPL: The Umpires Penalised Sylhet Sunrisers Five Runs

The umpires penalized Sylhet Sunriser’s five runs for changing the condition of the ball during their BPL match against the Khulna Tigers. It is the first time aside has been disciplined for such a matter in the BPL, whether during play or after. The incident took place in the ninth over, bowled by Ravi Bopara.

Ravi Bopara was bowling and was seen running his fingers on the ball when the umpires asked for the ball to be changed and play stopped.

The incident happened in the ninth over, the ball which was bowled by Ravi Bopara. The English all-rounder was seen running his fingers on the ball during the broadcaster’s over. After which the on-field umpires Mahfuzur Rahman and Prageet Rambukwella caught the ball.

Changed Balls.

Seeing the boundary conditions. The umpires sent back wicketkeeper Anamul Haque, who tried to talk to him. Bopara also contacted the umpires and said something. But by then the umpires had ordered the fourth official to bring out the changed balls.

According to the Terms of the Game, section 41.3.5, “If it is possible to identify the player(s) responsible for changing the position of the ball. The umpire shall immediately replace the ball. Additionally, the bowler’s final umpire 5 Will award. The penalty goes to the opposing side.”

The law also stipulates that the umpire shall report the matter to the match referee. He will take such action as deemed appropriate against the player(s) concerned”.

First time that Bopara is leading a BPL team-

Bopara was made the captain of Sylhet from this match in place of Mosaddek Hossain. This is the first time that Bopara is leading a BPL team, having played in the last 65 matches in the tournament. He continued to bowl after the incident.
