New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has unconvinced that captain Kane Williamson is unlikely to undergo elbow surgery. Kane had a problem with his elbow for some time, due to which he recently missed the second Test against India in Mumbai.
Even though Gary Stead is not expected to go under Kane’s knife, the 31-year-old is likely to be sidelined for 8-9 weeks, which will see him ruled out of New Zealand’s next assignment at home against Bangladesh. “I think surgery is unlikely,” Gary Stead said.

“With tendon injuries around the elbow, my understanding of the condition from talking to our physio is that surgery is the only way to determine rehab. If we don’t want to amputate a tendon, that’s not our choice. To do.
“So Kane is doing well. I expect it to be a consistent stint. Last time, if you look before the World Test Championship and the IPL and the T20 World Cup, it was about eight or nine weeks. So, I expect It’s somewhere in that time range again. We’re trying not to set the time limit at this stage.”
Gary Stead also pointed out that senior batsman Ross Taylor’s duel in the Test series had a lot to do with the lack of playing time. Ross’s duel in all four innings and scoring only 20 runs has put his future in doubt.
“Ross Taylor has toured hopelessly by his standards, but he has been an unusual player for New Zealand for a long time,” Stead observed. “So he is not the only man who has come to India or Asian conditions and duel here.
“I think there are some factors behind it, with the lack of match time from the first. Before the second Test, we had a lot of training or some training which was also washed out. I think Ross will look back and be disappointed in it himself.
However, there is a fine balance between trying to play a campaign rally and putting the spinners under some pressure and believing in their defense to bat long.
Stead also endorsed that he would discuss the batsman’s future in the game with Taylor and the selectors. The 37-year-old, who became the first player to appear in 100 games in each profile, is in competition for his spot from the likes of Will Young and Daryl Mitchell, according to Stead.
“I think what’s encouraging for our team is that we now have more options than we did a year or two ago,” Stead said.
“You’ve seen the genesis of Will Young and Daryl Mitchell, in particular, who have come on the Test ground and explained really well. But let’s not forget that Ross Taylor has an unparalleled record behind them as well.

“He’s been one of New Zealand’s premier batsmen for a long, long time, and you just don’t miss that class for over an hour. I have to go home and talk with the selectors and have a conversation with Ross. Well, that’s where he sees his game moving up.”
