New Zealand cricket legend Chris Cairns has been left paralyzed. After suffering a stroke during a heart operation and faces “a long road to recovery“, his family said Friday.
Cairns, 51, has returned to his home in the Australian capital, Canberra. But remains in critical condition following major heart surgery in Sydney. That has been marred by complications.
He has suffered a heart attack this month after a tear developed in the lining of a major artery. The former Canberra-based international underwent emergency surgery in Sydney. The trauma to his spinal cord during the surgery resulted in paralysis of his legs. The family said in a statement.
Cairns played 62 Tests between 1989 and 2004, averaging 29.4 with the ball and 33.53 with the bat. Which included 87 sixes – a world record at the time. Cairns, one of the world’s top all-rounders in the early 2000s.
Aortic dissection is a serious condition in which there is a tear in the inner lining of the main artery of the body (aorta).
Chris and his family now want to focus on spending time together where possible and making whatever progress they can in his recovery. We will update everyone when there is more news, but that is likely to be sometime away.
