The women’s cricket event has also been included in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham next year. The women’s T20 cricket team from seven countries including India and hosts England will take part in it.
This is the first time when the event of women’s cricket is being included in these sports. However, the cricket event has got a place in the Commonwealth Games for the second time. Before this, in the year 1998, one-day cricket event was included in the men’s category in the Games of Kuala Lumpur. That year South Africa won the gold medal.
Louise Martin, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation said, “Cricket and Commonwealth Games complement each other. We are very happy with the return of this event to these sports after Kuala Lumpur once again.” He also said “Women’s T20 cricket debut in these Commonwealth Games will be a historic moment. It will also give new heights to women’s sports all over the world.”
Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has also reacted on qualifying for the Commonwealth Games. She said, “It is a great pleasure to have a place in the Commonwealth Games. We are fully prepared for these games. We also made it to the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup held in Australia last year and I am very confident that we will also do our best in these games. ” At the same time, she said, “This is a big opportunity for the women’s section in these sports as well as for cricket. I sincerely hope that we will be able to make a mark in these sports and will return with many good memories.”. “

Qualified based on international T20 rankings
Apart from hosts England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Australia have qualified for this event. Based on the international T20 rankings as of April 1, 2021, these countries have made their place in the Commonwealth Games. Apart from this, the Caribbean team will also participate in this event. In fact, at the international level, the West Indies teams play a group of Caribbean islands. However, as far as the Commonwealth or Olympic Games are concerned, here all these Caribbean islands take different parts. Now it will be decided from the qualifying tournament between these islands which team will be a part of this event in place of West Indies.
