ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Afghanistan cricket team may have to face ban due to Taliban. Afghanistan’s participation in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is not in the hands of the ICC but in the hands of the International Olympic Council (IOC).

Statement On The Absence Of Women’s Cricket Team in Afghanistan:-

ICC Chief Executive Officer Geoff Allardyce gave this statement while expressing his views on the absence of a women’s cricket team in Afghanistan due to the influence of the Taliban.

In October, the IOC approved the recommendation to include T20 cricket as a new sport in the LA28 Olympics.

The ICC in its proposal had recommended a six-team competition for both the Men’s and Women’s competitions, which was approved by the IOC.

Teams Can Qualify For This Event:-

By 2025, LA28 and ICC will be working on a competition structure as well as the way in which teams can qualify for the event.

LA28 organizers have pushed for gender equality at the Olympics, which will generally see participation from both genders in individual and team sports.

Although Afghanistan currently has no women’s cricket team, 22 of the 25 contracted players have gone abroad since the Taliban takeover in August 2021. However, there remains a chance that the men’s team could participate in this event in five years.

“Olympic competition teams are fielded by the National Olympic Committees of those countries,” Allardyce told the BBC’s Stumped podcast.

We Pitched To LA28 Organizers To Include Our Game:-

As an international sports federation, we have put to LA28 organizers to include our sport and the IOC and they (LA28) have included cricket.

In terms of the situation with the National Olympic Committee of Afghanistan. I know that they (IOC) are keeping an eye on the progress and development there. “Our position on cricket and supporting our members in Afghanistan is no different from other international sporting organizations.”
