Australia coach Andrew fears more Covid-19 cases in the team before winning the match. McDonald’s believes that their T20 World Cup squad may see more COVID-19 cases before winning matches against Ireland and Afghanistan.
The sight of a masked Matthew Wade chatting with teammates from afar at the MCG during a rain delay on Friday evening may be disturbing to some in a country that has, until recently, been some of the world’s most Strict bio-safety regulations enforced.

Speaking about the rising number of Covid-19 cases among players in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, McDonald said that it is possible that more cases could emerge in his team.
“He’s locked himself in a change room that he’ll hate because he needs to entertain the people around him,” captain Aaron Finch told the host broadcaster on Friday.
Talking to his vice-captain in Melbourne, Finch appeared on a stage to use his hoodie to cover his mouth, the end of a 262-day lockdown in the city during the pandemic.
The federal government dropped mandatory isolation requirements for positive cases earlier this month and ICC rules now allow those who test positive for the virus.
And Australia coach Andrew McDonald suggested further cases could be inevitable.
“It’s very likely, in fact, that’s the way it’s gone,” McDonald’s told reporters after the washout.
“The strong point around that was that Matthew Wade was going to play tonight (Friday) – so each person is affected differently by the virus.
Obviously, Adam Zampa wasn’t quite right. We took precautions to make sure he was ready to go for the game while Matthew Wade reacted completely differently, had fewer symptoms and he was ready.”
“He had to break away from the group, that was probably the only thing where we had to communicate with him separately, which is a little unique. But yeah, it’s a real possibility for all teams.”
Under ICC’s playing conditions for the tournament, Australia can temporarily replace Wade in their squad with a specialist keeper, but the 34-year-old will not be able to play in matches again until he returns a negative PCR test.
“It was probably inevitable that this would happen at some stage,” Finch said of his positive cases. “We’ve been really lucky over the years that we’ve taken care of ourselves and we haven’t had many COVID cases.”
