A senior BCCI official told InsideSport that it has more to do with the 2023 World Cup than the West Indies tour. Despite the poor performance, Suryakumar has retained his place in the ODI team.

He plays ahead of Ruturaj or Yashasvi:-

“It is clear that if Surya was in the team, he would have played ahead of Ruturaj or Yashasvi. And the team wants to try someone new.

But Surya is not yet out of the Test plan. With the Asia Cup and the World Cup coming up, he is a very important player, so he should focus on white-ball cricket for now. He will get a chance.”

The official also explained, “Look, Surya is a very capable batsman, one of the best in the world at the moment. But he is also 32 years old and we have to plan for the future.

This is where someone like Yashasvi or Ruturaj comes in. He is a clean striker of the ball, and can set the pace. If he can prove his potential, it will be great for Indian cricket.
