The New Zealander has been appointed to prevent the collapse of a team that has won just one of its last 17 matches and will report on duty later this month to begin work with new captain Ben Stokes.

McCullum was one of the most engaged players during his on-field career and is confident that making England a competitive, lucrative organization can lead to a wider Test game.

“That’s what gets me excited if we can get that right, to get England back where they are – where we need to be, which is at the top of the pile.

Giving his message to the fans of his adopted country, he said: “If we can achieve the ambitions of both Stokes and myself, this is going to be a team that is definitely worth following.

“Hopefully we can play that kind of fun – I wouldn’t say equestrian, because that’s probably what other people expect us to do – cricket.

“It’s a very simple philosophy, but if we do it right with the talent that is in the English cricket set-up, hopefully, we will get results to go in the right direction and build something together.”

McCullum also spoke of his close relationship with England ODI captain Eoin Morgan, revealing that the pair speaks on a daily basis.

Described his new limited-overs counterpart Matthew Mott as a “really shrewd coach” who operates “without arrogance”.

On sharing the multi-format players, he said: “We will have a good relationship. There will be times when we will fight for the players, no doubt about it.

But we will try and come to the right decision for the player and the right decision for English cricket.
