Salt is expected to come in at No 3 but could slide down the order if England starts well, keeping in mind the flexible batting order they have used throughout the World Cup.

But he has barely bowled due to minor injuries in England’s two training sessions at the Adelaide Oval this week. And ESPNcricinfo knows he is unlikely to play against India as a result. The England camp described the injury as a muscle stiffness.

Both Jordan and Salt have experience with the dimensions of the Adelaide Oval – short square boundaries, long straights – having played for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash.
