Former Indian fielding coach R Sridhar told how Mahendra Singh Dhoni not only focused on batting and bowling of Team India, but also on fielding and fitness. The former wicketkeeper-batsman is considered one of the most successful and influential captains in Indian cricket history. The reason for this is also that he is the only captain in history to win three ICC trophies. Under his captaincy, India first won the T20 World Cup in 2007. After this, India won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and then the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also credited for turning the Indian team into one of the best teams in the world. Dhoni also played a key role in India’s dominance in all formats over the past decade. Before and during Dhoni’s emergence, India had some of the greatest cricketers in India in the form of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble and, many more. Despite having world-class talent, India was struggling to win major ICC tournaments, but Dhoni changed India’s approach to not only win but also dominate the game.

Dhoni gave a lot of emphasis on fielding

R Sridhar became India’s fielding coach in 2014 during Dhoni’s captaincy. He said that Dhoni had made it clear that fielding and running between the wickets were two areas for which he was not going to compromise. Although Dhoni faced criticism for excluding experienced cricketers who were not fit in the early days of captaincy, but he also delivered results.

Virat carried forward the passion of fielding

Sridhar told cricket.com, “MS… when he was the captain. He used to field. And running between the wickets was an eye-opener for me. MS had said, ‘He will not compromise on two things. They are – fielding and running between the wickets.’ And that is something that is still true. The way he insisted on fielding, Virat [Kohli] carried it forward. Ravi [Shastri] always used to say that 11 best fielding would win the field. So that’s the importance that was placed on the fielding.”
