Stead confirmed that opener Tom Latham would take over as captain and that Hamish Rutherford has been called in as Kane Williamson ‘s replacement.

“It’s a shame for Kane to be forced to withdraw on the eve of such an important match. We all understand his position at this point and know how disappointed he will be,” Stead said.

Williamson’s replacement in New Zealand’s squad, Hamish Rutherford, is already in England and playing T20 cricket for the Leicestershire Foxes. He played his last Test seven years ago.
