ENG vs NZ, 3rd Test: Daryl Mitchell breaks 73 year old record, ENG returns with Bairstow’s century

ENG vs NZ, 3rd Test: Darrell Mitchell (109) scored a century as New Zealand scored 329 runs in the first innings on the second day of the third Test against England. At the end of the second day’s play, England were 264 for six wickets.

They are 65 runs behind New Zealand. Jonny Bairstow once again played a stellar innings for him. He has scored 130 not out off 126 balls. Bairstow has hit 21 fours in his innings. Jamie Overton remains unbeaten on 89 off 106 balls.

At one time the England team had lost 6 wickets for 56 runs :-

ENG vs NZ: England’s team was struggling at one point of time losing six wickets for 56 runs. After this, Bairstow and Overton took the lead and shared an unbeaten 209 runs for the seventh wicket. New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult has taken three wickets. Neil Wegner and Tim Southee got two and one wicket respectively.

England had a disappointing start in the second innings. Boult took the first three wickets. He clean bowled Alex Lees (4 runs), Ollie Pope (6 runs) and Jack Crawley (6 runs).

Joe Root was caught by Tim Southee at the hands of Tom Blundell on a personal score of five runs. Neil Wegner gave the sixth blow to the English team by dismissing Ben Stokes. Stokes made 18 off 13 balls and was caught by Kane Williamson.

Daryl Mitchell breaks 73 year old record :-

On the second day, New Zealand’s Mitchell reached his century in 213 balls, which included eight fours and three sixes. This was Mitchell’s third consecutive century in the series. Earlier, he had scored 108 runs at Lord’s and 190 at Trent Bridge.

Daryl Mitchell has become the first Kiwi batsman in New Zealand in 73 years to cross the 400-run mark in a Test series against England. Mitchell has surpassed Burt Sutcliffe, who scored 451 runs in seven innings during his tour of England in 1949. Sutcliffe also scored a century and four half-centuries on that tour.

ENG vs NZ: Daryl Mitchell became the 4th player to score three centuries in England :-

At the same time, Mitchell has also become only the fourth batsman of this century who has scored three centuries against England. Mohammad Yusuf (2006), Steve Smith (2019) and Rahul Dravid (2022 and 2011) are among those who have scored three centuries in England.

Dravid has done this feat twice in England. Apart from this, Daryl Mitchell has also become the highest run-scorer in the three-Test series against England. He is equal to Hashim Amla of South Africa, who held the record for scoring 482 runs in the three-Test series against England.
