India captain Rohit Sharma Insists that Virat Kohli’s place in the team is safe despite his poor form.

Speaking to reporters ahead of India’s ODI series with England, Rohit responded to Kohli’s critics.

“There are always ups and downs in the form of a cricketer but the quality of a player never goes down,” he said.

“We must always bear in mind that some players have a quality and we as a team take that quality back.”

“When someone is scoring consistently for so long, we cannot ignore his contribution if he is not scoring in a series or two or in a year or two.

The comments come in the wake of several criticisms, especially from Kapil Dev, who expressed that Kohli’s position was protected only on the basis of the 33-year-old’s reputation.

“If the world number two Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin can be dropped from the Test team, then your number one batsman can also be dropped,” Kapil said.

India will get a strong team:-

The legendary all-rounder insisted that competing for places will give India a stronger side as they ramp up their preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be held in Australia later this year.

“If he is not performing, you can’t continue to keep these boys out. I hope there will be a healthy fight for selection, youngsters should outperform Kohli.

But Kohli needs to think, ‘Yes at one point I was a big player, but I need to play like that No 1 player again. It’s a problem for the team, it’s not a bad problem,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Kohli is in doubt for the first ODI as he suffered a groin injury during the T20I series.
