Indian Players Injury: Currently most cricketers are obsessed with lifting weights in the gym. In such a situation, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has made a scathing attack on today’s players. Sehwag believes that lifting heavy weights in the gym is one of the reasons why Indian players get injured frequently.

Virender Sehwag: Performance coach Basu Shankar reprimanded

Sehwag slammed Team India’s performance coach Basu Shankar for creating a uniform program for all Indian players. Sehwag recalled a conversation he had with R Ashwin when he was the team mentor of Punjab Kings.

Why same schedule for all players

Sehwag said on TRS Clips, “Basu Shankar was with the Indian team for many years and he made uniform programs for all the players. Why should there be a single schedule for Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli? When Ashwin was with Kings XI Punjab, he told me that he was doing the clean and jerk workout because it was in trend.”

“Athletes train from childhood to clean and jerk and still get injured. Imagine a cricketer when he is over 30 years old. Due to this workout, both Ashwin and Akshar had problems with their knees.

Sehwag said fitness is important but not everyone is Virat Kohli

“We didn’t do any weight training during our days, but still we were able to play cricket all day. This could be Virat Kohli’s funda. But not everyone is Virat Kohli. You need to design a training program based on your body.”

Sehwag also said that players like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Yuvraj Singh rarely faced such injuries during their playing days.

Sehwag said, “There is no place for weightlifting in cricket. Instead, you should do exercises that improve your game. Weightlifting will give you strength, but also increase stiffness and pain.”
