Jos Buttler: England’s white ball captaincy could end Buttler’s Test career

Jos Buttler: ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 winning captain Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday. Jos Buttler was then appointed as the captain of England in the One Day International and T20 formats.

In such a situation, England batsman Jos Buttler said on Friday that his appointment as England’s new white-ball captain could end his Test career.

31-year-old Jos Buttler was till now the vice-captain of the team in limited overs :-

Wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler, 31, was still the vice-captain of the limited-overs side; having limited his Test career since 2015 to focus on white-ball cricket.

World Cup winner Buttler scored more than 800 runs in IPL 2022 and he is certainly a strong player of limited overs cricket. He has so far scored 4,120 runs in ODI cricket with 10 centuries.

Butler has so far scored 2 centuries in white ball cricket :-

Butler, a strong player of white ball cricket, has been able to score only two centuries in 57 matches in the Test format. Even in the ongoing fifth Test against India at Edgbaston, he is not a member of the England team.

Buttler is now set to lead England in 12 limited-overs matches against India and South Africa in July. He played the last Test in January during the Ashes series in Australia.

Cricket legend wants to see Jos Buttler as an opener in Test cricket :-

Despite his failure in Test cricket, Butler is wanted by former England captain Michael Vaughan and Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara to return to Test cricket as an opener.

This is a role where he has excelled in T20 cricket. However, it’s believed that the way Eoin Morgan put an end to his Test career. Similarly, Butler is also going to stay away from Test cricket due to captaincy.

Jos Buttler, “My first priority is to be the captain of the white-ball team” :-

Speaking to the media after becoming the captain, Jos Buttler said, “Definitely my first priority is to be the captain of the white-ball team. I am very focused and really excited for the challenge that lies ahead.

I think it’s going to be a really big challenge and that’s what I need to focus on the whole time. Talking about Tests is a question that should not answered unless I am available for selection; which is not the case.”
