The 28-year-old Kyle Mayers, scored a stunning double hundred on his debut as West Indies shocked Bangladesh by three wickets in the first Test in Chittagong on Sunday.

Mayers hit an unbeaten 210 from 310 balls — with 20 fours and seven sixes to guide his side to 395-7 with just nine balls left on the final day.

West Indies, who are on tour without most of their first-choice players because of the coronavirus pandemic, beat the best run chase in Asia, set by Sri Lanka who hit 388 to beat Zimbabwe by four wickets in Colombo in 2017.

Mayers, the second West Indies player to get a double hundred on his debut after Laurence Rowe and sixth overall, was brilliantly aided by fellow debutant Nkrumah Bonner, who hit 86.

Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner got together in the final session on day four, West Indies were reeling at 59 for 3 and 336 away from an unlikely win. They first took the side to 110 for 3 and then stitched a sensational 216-run effort on the final day to help West Indies pull off the highest chase in Asia.

“I am always a positive person. I always believe in my abilities and the team, and I always was positive” he said. “We never gave up. We always said in the dressing room that we need to keep fighting. The captain and coach told the bowlers as well that you need to keep fighting on a pitch like this. Shannon put in great effort to lead the way.

Mayers, who took the Man-of-the-Match honors for his stunning double-century, later said he had always backed himself and his team-mates to get the job done.

it was the fifth-highest successful run-chase in Test history, and the highest ever in Asia. West Indies achieved the feat with three wickets to spare.
