David Malan’s memories were on the cards for a moment. The 33-year-old has been a mainstay of England’s T20I team for the past two years and is currently the number one batsman in the world, but he last featured in Test cricket at the time of the 2018 series against India. He was dropped after the Edgbaston Test due to poor form.
27.84 in 15 matches – but his current performance at the international level has been strong and he scored 199 runs in his only championship innings this season for Yorkshire. He averaged 66 in last season’s Bob Willis Trophy. England may also have an eye on the Ashes series. During the last tour of Australia, Malan averaged 42.55 in Perth and scored an outstanding century.
“David Malan deserves his chance in the Test arena,” England head coach Chris Silverwood said in a statement. “He has a lot of experience in all formats and, if he is called, I am sure he can come and do well at his home ground. Having played first-class cricket this season in a certain amount of time, he has shown that Highly accomplished 199 for Yorkshire against Sussex at Headingley in June.”
Sibley has been dropped by 19.77 in ten this year. His highest score in the current series was 28 against India in four innings. Sibley’s exit means H Hameed, is envisioned to move on to the opening with Malan coming in at number three. Crowley, who had been abandoned at Lord’s, is sent back to Kent. Ollie Pope and Dan Lawrence made their way into the team.
Chris Silverwood said: “Jack Crowley will return to Kent last week at Lord’s with assistant coach Graham Thorpe to build on the work done in the nets.”
“Zak is still a big part of our plans going forward, Once again on the Test grounds.”
