Marnus Labuschagne looks to Joe Root’s methods for Sri Lanka’s success, as he expects his toughest challenge to come against spin.
Labuschagne completed his latest county stint with Glamorgan in an abandoned T20I clash against Surrey on Sunday.

But before he took 2 for 27 in his four overs before the tour, his leg-spin could have been used more regularly by Aaron Finch and Pat. Cummins.
However, it will be with the bat where they will have the best chance of defining the games, especially the two Tests in Galle that conclude the tour.
Root had an unprecedented Test series in Sri Lanka in early 2021, where he scored 228 and 186 in the first innings at Galle, followed by centuries at Pallekele on the previous tour.
Labuschagne’s Test career began in the United Arab Emirates in 2018 against Pakistan but his only other experience in Asia was the recent series in Pakistan.
The home team’s spinners were overwhelmed in the three matches where Labuschagne started with 90 runs in Rawalpindi before taking the first-innings duck in the next two matches.
“For me, this is my first real subcontinent challenge against spin, it’s about winning that challenge,” Labuschagne told BBC Sport Wales. “Joe Root played brilliantly there, I learned a lot about my game there.
“As a team, we want to be the best in the world, no matter where you take us, we want to win games and I definitely think we can do that in Sri Lanka.
I have to get used to the conditions, the heat, and the sweat, which is something we haven’t done [in the UK] in the last few matches.”
Although Labuschagne is now returning to Australia duty in what will be a busy period of national action, he looks forward to another pre-Ashes stint with Glamorgan next year.
Labuschagne’s schedule is not like some of Australia’s three formats as he is not yet a regular in the T20I squad, but there are 11 Tests to be played by next March and a lot of ODI cricket as well,
So he knows he may need to manage his workload while his wife, Rebekah, is also expecting their first child at the end of the year.
He has often credited his 2019 spell with Glamorgan. As he was able to find an immediate breakthrough when he parachuted into the side as a concussion substitute for Steven Smith at Lord’s.

“There are a lot of things in the mix, but I don’t see anything wrong with trying to play in the Ashes last time, and play some county cricket with Glamorgan [going] to the Ashes next summer,” he said.
“That’s our blueprint but we’ve got so much cricket this year. About 16 Tests and 18 one-day games, so we have to make sure I’m fit and healthy. And can also spend time at home with my wife and kids at some point.”
