former captain of Sri Lanka Angelo Mathews withdraws from limited-overs series against India, may announce retirement
The Sri Lanka cricket team is going through a very difficult phase these days. From the poor performance on the field to the ongoing matters inside the board, the headlines are constantly making headlines. In fact, recently the Sri Lanka Cricket Board gave central contracts to 29 players, and former captain of the team Angelo Mathews was not found in these players.
Soon after losing his place in the annual contract, Mathews withdrew from the limited-overs series against India citing personal reasons. The 34-year-old Mathews was also not part of the team during the tour of England and Bangladesh.
Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne is not found a place in the central contract
Along with Angelo Mathews, Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne has also not found a place in the central contract. In the current contract in Sri Lanka Cricket, the top 24 players have been placed in four categories on the basis of performance. Six players have been awarded category ‘A’ contracts, earning between $70,000 and $100,000 annually.
Mathews wrote a letter to the Sri Lankan cricket administration stating that he was considering retirement. He may announce his retirement in the coming few days. At present, the Sri Lanka cricket team is going through a continuous tour of change and if Mathews retires in such a situation, then it will be a big setback for the national team.

Angelo Mathews has scored 6236 runs in 90 Test matches for Sri Lanka at an average of 44.86 and has also taken 33 wickets. At the same time, in 218 ODIs, he has 120 wickets with 5835 runs in his name. While in T20I format, he has taken 38 wickets with 1148 runs in 78 matches.
