Not Just Hardik, Rahul, And Pant Are Also Not In Gambhir’s Plans… Hints About The Future Captain From The Sri Lanka Tour Team. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli exiting the T20 scene, the hunt for India’s next captain is heating up. For the Sri Lanka tour, Suryakumar Yadav got the T20 captain’s armband.
But all eyes are also on the young gun, Shubman Gill. Not only is he the T20 vice-captain, but he’s also the ODI vice-captain!
So, is Head Coach Gautam Gambhir hinting at Gill as India’s next skipper?
Shubman’s On Fire Under Gambhir!
Since Gambhir took over as coach, things have been looking good for Shubman Gill. He was even made captain for the recent Zimbabwe tour after the T20 World Cup, and guess what?

He led India to a convincing 4-1 series win! In ODIs, the captain is still Rohit Sharma, from whom Gill can learn a lot. At just 24, Gill has plenty of time to develop under Rohit’s guidance. By the time Rohit retires, Gill could be a much more mature leader.
Hardik And Pant Out Of The Race?
Hardik Pandya seems to be out of the captaincy race already. Fitness issues, frequent injuries, and workload management seem to be holding him back.
On the other hand, Rishabh Pant, another rising star, hasn’t fully cemented his place back in Team India after his accident in 2022. So, both Pant and Pandya, who were once considered Gill’s biggest competitors for the captaincy role, are now lagging behind.
KL Rahul Ignored Too?
Before the team announcement, there were talks of KL Rahul leading the ODI side. If that was the plan, then wouldn’t Rahul be the vice-captain now with Rohit back? Looks like Rahul’s also been sidelined in the captaincy race.
Gill even captained the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024. He got to learn from the legendary Indian pacer Ashish Nehra during his stint. Though Gujarat finished a disappointing eighth, this experience could prove valuable in the future.
