Pakistan captain Babar Azam broke a 16-year-old record held by Mohammad Yousuf in the first innings of the opening Test against New Zealand in Karachi.

Babar Azam now holds the record for most runs in a calendar year by a Pakistan batsman, surpassing Mohammad Yousuf’s total of 2435 runs in 2006. Batting on 54* at the end of the first season, Babar has 2477 runs across all formats. 2022.

The fifty also means that he now holds the record for the most scores of 50 or more in a calendar year.

It was Babar’s 25th 50+ score, surpassing Ricky Ponting’s record of 24 in 2005.

Like his innings so far in the Boxing Day Test, Babar has often been the lone warrior for Pakistan when their backs have been against the wall.
