But the 119-run partnership of Marcus Harris (67) and Chris Dent (52) was broken by Hassan in the 41st over.

And Gloucestershire fell in reply before being run out late in a jiffy. On the second ball of the final over, George Balderson fell while answering a run-out call from Luke Wells.

Ryan Higgins’ unbeaten half-century:-

It was at least an uplifting note to end the day for Gloucestershire, who lunched at 101-0, losing six wickets for just 69 runs. Three of them for Ali – with Ryan Higgins’ unbeaten half-century. make them happy

Anderson’s first seven-over spell went for 21, but he was at his economic best on his other two spells, in which, although without a wicket, he conceded only nine runs in nine overs.

His England colleague Saqib Mahmood did a little better, taking 2-44 with a wicket each for Balderson and leg-spinner Matt Parkinson, apart from being hoisted into the stands by Harris in his first over.

“It was special for me to bowl with the great Jimmy Anderson. I will remember that I came off the field and he was clapping me – it was a great moment for me.

“I was nervous about sharing the bowling with Jimmy but he was there to support me and he was backing me up.

The first session was not good enough, but after that, we tried to bowl in the right areas.

“I’ve heard a lot about county cricket and I’ll do my best to get a lot of experience here – I have Jimmy here and I’ll talk to him.

This is a wonderful opportunity for me. There is a lot of talent in this group. We have an excellent bowling attack.”

Gloucestershire All-Rounder Ryan Higgins:-

“At the start of the day we had two quality batsmen facing some really quality bowlers and it was really time to try and see how those bowlers go about their business.

“It’s always good to see James Anderson. It was a testament to our openers how good he is.

“We all know we didn’t play the position well in the afternoon. The ball started to reverse a bit but it wasn’t an excessive reverse swing. Unfortunately, that was enough for us to do that session.”
