Recently, at the age of 31, Stokes retired from the 50-over format to focus on Tests and T20s.
In such a situation, Shastri, who handed over the ODI debut cap to Pandya, feels that Pandya can also follow the same path.
Pandya has been injured many times in his career:-
Hardik Pandya has been injured several times in his career and this season he has made a great comeback from injury.
However, after the T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup in India, former India coach Ravi Shastri believes that the 28-year-old all-rounder may retire from ODI cricket.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Friday, Shastri said, “The 50-over format can be pushed back, but it can still survive if you just focus on the World Cup.
World Cup should be given paramount importance:-
From the ICC’s point of view, the World Cup should be given paramount importance. Be it the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup.
He said, “Test cricket will always remain an important part of cricket. You have players already choosing which formats they want to play.
Take Hardik Pandya only. He wants to play T20 cricket. And it is very clear in his mind that ‘I don’t want to play anything else.
Can see him take off from ODI cricket:-
He said, “He will play 50-over cricket because there is a World Cup in India next year. After that, you can see him taking leave from ODI cricket.
You will see the same thing happen to other players. They will start choosing the format and they have every right to do that.”

Hardik though is still very young in age. And he has gone through a lot of difficulties before his spectacular comeback this year.
The 28-year-old will definitely consider his options and take whatever he sees fit.
Pandya has at present clearly indicated to focus on the white-ball formats before any possible red-ball return.
