Pacer Gerald gets maiden Test call-up for Australia tour

Maiden Test call-up handed over to South African pacer Gerald Coetzee. As CSA has announced the squad for the upcoming three-match Test series in Australia. Regulars Rassi van der Dussen (finger) and Keshav Maharaj (groin) who missed at least a part of South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign due to injuries. They have recovered and are part of the 16-man shortlist.

Gerald Coetzee, 22, earned his place after impressing for his home team the Knights. Taking 40 wickets at an average of 28.82 and scoring a career-best 4-47 in 13 first-class matches so far.

Meanwhile, Theunis de Bruyne, who last played for South Africa in 2019, has been recalled with the Titans after a successful first-class season where he averaged 41.83, including titles in the final round of matches. The winning 143 were also included.

Heinrich Klaasen replaced wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton and Viktor Mpitsang, national convener of selectors said –

He said – “We are delighted with the group of players that we have gathered for this tour. I think the selectors now have a core group of Proteas that has been built. It is about building on what we have.” Viktor Mpitsang Told. “It is a welcome return for our vice-captain Temba after injury and we are also delighted to have Rassie back after a finger injury in England. I am particularly excited about our pace attack, which will certainly add stature. And growing in strength.” ,

Heinrich Klaasen replaced wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, who played in the last of his three Tests against England in September. Rickelton is undergoing rehab for an ankle injury that ruled him out of contention for the Tests. Also unavailable for selection is top-order batsman Keegan Pietersen. He suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month while playing for the Dolphins in the CSA T20 Challenge final in Potchefstroom.
