But now 15-year-old Sonam is set to play in India’s women’s premier league and says the money will change her family’s life.

Sonam was the youngest player drafted for the inaugural edition of the Twenty20 tournament when she joined Mumbai Indians in the auction and took home a check of Rs 10 lakh.
The news of his signing sparked a wave of celebration in his village, where blackouts are a daily occurrence and piped water has only recently arrived.
His contract is dwarfed by the standards of the men’s Indian Premier League, but it is 100 times his father’s monthly salary from shift work in a glass factory.
It is very difficult to survive on my father’s salary:-
Sonam, the youngest of six siblings, told AFP: “It is very difficult to survive on my father’s salary. We face a lot of money problems.”
He was given a hero’s welcome on his return, greeted by district officials and fans waving Indian flags and bursting crackers.
Now they too are proud of his achievements:-
His father said, “We felt very proud of him that day. The villagers used to look down on us, but now they too are proud of his achievements.”
Sonam, who is a big fan of Indian men’s team left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, hopes that WPL will be her first step towards playing for India’s senior women’s team.
Sonam, who counts chocolate and ice cream among her other hobbies, said, “I will learn a lot by playing with seniors.”
