Angelo Mathews has taken aim at Sri Lanka’s Test match schedule this year. His complaint is that Sri Lanka will not play enough Tests this year.

Mathews has asked what is the importance of Test cricket if the scheduling is so unbalanced.

Not playing too many Test matches this year:-

Mathews, who became Sri Lanka’s third-highest Test scorer in Christchurch, said- It is unfortunate that we are not playing too many Test matches this year.

Five Tests are too few. We are back in Tests after a long time. The last Test was six months ago. Actually, Sri Lanka will play five Tests in 2023.

Of these, two will be against New Zealand, two against Pakistan, and one against Ireland. He further said- “Everyone is talking about the end of Test cricket.

But we are not doing Test cricket any well playing only five Tests a year. Hope we get more matches this year. Five is not enough.”

Not a single series of three Tests:-

In fact, Sri Lanka does not have a single series of three Test matches. India, Australia, and England regularly play five-Test series against each other during the same period.

In the worst-case scenario, they play a four-Test series. Apart from India, England, and Australia, most other sides play two-Test series.
