Taking inspiration from Australia’s Big Bash, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going to implement the rule of “Impact Player” in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) from next year.
The board said in a statement that we are going to implement the Impact Player rule from the next season. Under the rules, each team can change one player in their XI depending on the context of the game during the match.
According to the rule, during the match, if the teams feel that they need a player in a particular situation or a particular player can affect the match accordingly, then these teams can make changes in the XI.
Earlier, the BCCI had implemented this rule as a trial in the domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. And after the success of this experiment, it has now been approved to be implemented in IPL.
In Syed Mushtaq Ali, Delhi’s 22-year-old Hrithik Shokeen became the first impact player and played a key role in helping his team win the match by 71 runs.
In Australia’s Big Bash tournament, teams name the 12th or 13th player at the toss as the team’s “X factor player”.
There this player can come on the field after ten overs in the first innings and can replace any player who is yet to bat.
On the other hand, from the point of view of bowling, such a player can be changed, who has not bowled more than one over. The impact player can bowl a maximum quota of four overs in total, even after being replaced.
The use of an impact player is not mandatory under the BCCI rules and it entirely depends on the particular team whether they want to use it or not.
It can be used anytime before the 14th over in both the innings. Whenever the team takes a decision in this regard, it will have to inform the on-field officials or the fourth umpire.
If the team field an impact player instead of an injured player. Then the injured player will not be a part of the match further. Otherwise, the impact player can be brought on the field after completing one over.
However, if a team uses an impact pair and this player gets injured. Then in this case the same rule as in normal circumstances will be used in these circumstances.

An impact player can be used after the fall of a wicket for the batting team. Or it can be used during an innings break. Just before doing this, the umpires will have to inform about this.
