WI call up Alick Athanaze for a Test tour of the SA

Athanaze, 24, was the leading run-scorer at the Under-19 World Cup in 2018, just ahead of Shubman Gill, and played for West Indies A against Bangladesh last year. He has captained Windward Island Volcanoes in the four-day regional championship this season, scoring his maiden first-class hundred six days ago. If selected, he would be the first Dominican to play Test cricket since Shane Shillingford.

In 2017, he survived Hurricane Maria, which claimed over 3,000 lives in Dominica. “Such situations teach you the value of one’s life,” he told ESPNcricinfo in an interview the following year.

Desmond Haynes: Athanaze is one of the young players who we have invested in

Desmond Haynes, West Indies’ lead selector, said: “Athanaze is one of the young players who we have invested in, and he played well in the A-Team and CWI President’s XI.

“He showed great promise in the CG United Super50 last year and then got his first hundred in the West Indies Championship last week. We believe he should be given an opportunity at this level. He has also shown leadership, as captain of the Windwards at the start of this season.”

Athanaze replaces Nkrumah Bonner

Athanaze replaces Nkrumah Bonner, who has slipped down the pecking order, in one of two changes to the squad that won 1-0 in Bangladesh. Jomel Warrican, the left-arm spinner, is replaced by another uncapped player: the Barbadian seamer Akeem Jordan.
