Kane Williamson relinquishes Test captaincy and New Zealand announces new captain. Kane has decided to give up the Test captaincy for the New Zealand Cricket Team.

Williamson just relinquished the Test captaincy:-

The team announced the name of Tim Southee as the new captain. Williamson has only given up the Test captaincy, he will continue as the captain in the ODI and T20 formats.

Veteran fast bowler Tim Southee has been appointed as the new Test captain. Tom Latham was named vice-captain, having also captained at international level in Williamson’s absence.

Became the 31st Test captain of the New Zealand cricket team:-

Tim Southee has played 346 international matches, captaining the team in 22 T20 matches. Tim Southee has become the 31st Test captain of the New Zealand Cricket Team.

Williamson said about leaving the Test captaincy, this is the right time for this decision. I captained the Test team, it was a privilege for me.

I Enjoyed the challenge that came in the form of captaincy:-

For me, Test cricket is of the highest order, and I have enjoyed the challenge of captaining it. Your work as a captain, the workload increases. At this point in my career, I felt it was the right time to step down from Test captaincy.

Kane Williamson took over the Test captaincy of the team in 2016 after Brendon McCullum. He captained the team on 38 occasions.

Out of which he made the team victorious 22 times and played a draw 8 times. Under Williamson’s captaincy, New Zealand won the first edition of the Test Championship by defeating India.
