Dave Houghton wants to get ‘that chill’ when Zimbabwe plays ‘strong sides’

Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton is seeing encouraging signs that his players are learning how not to “freeze” against strong opposition and hopes the batsmen can put on a full-fledged performance during the remainder of the ODI series against Australia.

After batting, the top-order – led by Wesley Madhevere’s career-best 72 as the openers had negotiated the first ten overs – made a solid in the form of an unexpected podium during the opening game on Sunday, as Zimbabwe set for 4. reached 185. Lost his last six wickets for 15 runs in the 43rd over.

“I have been quoted about fearless cricket,” Houghton said, “Yes, we want to play fearless cricket; we want to see people express themselves. I have seen these people playing franchise cricket, and I’ve seen what they can do; and then watch them play international cricket, especially against these strong sides, and freeze a little bit. Somehow, I’m trying to beat that cold.

Houghton was ready to admit that the skill gap between Zimbabwe and teams like India and Australia is “huge” but one team returns to the rankings and competes with teams around them.

“The skill gap between us, India, Australia, and England is huge – there’s no hiding it,” he said. “Your batsmen are better than us, they’re more experienced, and your bowlers are taller and faster than us. All we can do is field competitively, which I wasn’t happy with on the second day. I thought we were sluggish and very Seemed jetlagged.
