Dottin guides Adelaide Strikers to maiden WBBL title

Better late than never. To this day, the cliché was the only calming tool for the Adelaide Strikers. However, on Saturday (26 November), the Strikers tasted success as they clinched their maiden WBBL title with a tight 10-run win over the Sydney Sixers. The Sixers finished with 137 in their chase of 148. On the big day, the runs on the board certainly helped the Strikers, who got off the block early. The opening pair of Laura Wolvaardt and Katie Mack put on 51 runs for the first wicket, but two wickets caught them back.

Dottin entered the stage at 53 for 2 and shared a 44-run partnership with Tahlia McGrath and remained unbeaten on 52. The Sixers finally gave up some runs as Ashley Gardner had an off day. The target didn’t seem like a tall order but the Sixers batsmen were never able to get going. The power-packed line-up saw the early exits of Suzie Bates, Alyssa Healy, Gardner and Erin Burns, reducing the Sixers to 16 for 4.

Dottin was destructive with the ball as well, as she picked up some early wickets. Ellyse Perry and Nicole Bolton carried the baton in a steady manner but the required rate kept climbing up. Bolton fell to McGrath and the Sixers’ chances further dwindled as Perry fell shortly afterwards. Maitlan Brown came with a cameo but it was a case of too little and too late.

It was a combined team effort from the Strikers’ bowling unit as they all bowled restrained spells and took timely wickets. It was another heartbreak for the Sixers, who despite being pace-setters in the league stage, again fell short in the finals.
