LONDON: Visiting South Africa have taken a 124-run lead in the first innings at the end of play on the second day of the first Test against England. South Africa made 289 for the loss of 7 wickets after wrapping up England’s innings for 165 on the second day.
England started the day at 116 for six. Adding 49 runs and lost the remaining four wickets and were bundled out for 165 runs. Ollie Pope, who remained unbeaten after scoring a half-century on the first day, scored 73 runs ahead of 61 runs while Stuart Broad and Jack Leach made 15 each. Kagiso Rabada took five wickets for 52 runs for South Africa. Enrique Norkhia took 3 for 63 and Marco Jensen took 2 for 30.

Dee came out to bat after cheaply stacking England. Captain Dean Elgar (47) and Irvi gave a great start to the African team. The duo shared an 85-run partnership for the first wicket. James Anderson broke the partnership by bowling Elgar. And became the first English bowler since 1994 at the age of 40 to take a Test wicket. After this, captain Ben Stokes gave the second blow to South Africa by getting Keegan Pietersen (24) caught by Jonny Bairstow. After this, Irvi and Markram did not let the team get any further setbacks till tea after that and took the team to 158 runs for two wickets.

After the tea break, the England bowlers showed their strength. And came back in the third and final session of the day, taking 5 wickets. In the third session, South Africa got the first blow in the form of Irvy. Irvy (73) caught by Ben Stokes behind the wicket at the hands of Fox. After this, Rossi Vander Dusen (19), Aiden Markram (16), Kyle Verne (11) quickly returned to the pavilion.

After losing 6 wickets for 210 runs, Keshav Maharaj took the lead with Marco Jensen. Both batted fast and took the team past 250 runs. Stokes gave the team their seventh success by getting Maharaj caught by Potts two overs. Before the end of the day’s play and broke the crucial 75-ball 72-run partnership between Jenson and Maharaj. Maharaj scored 41 runs and missed his half-century. At the end of the day’s play, South Africa scored 289 runs in 77 overs for the loss of 7 wickets. Jensen is unbeaten on 41 and Rabada 3 runs. Ben Stokes is England’s most successful bowler with 3 wickets.
