England Captain Joe Root Named Test Player of The Year

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday named England captain Joe Root as the men’s Test player of the year with 1,708 runs in 15 matches during the calendar year 2021.

The ICC Men’s Test Cricketers for 2021 :-

The Eng and Wales Cricket Board tweeted on their official Twitter handle, “Winner of the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2021. An incredible year from King, @root66”.

Root’s total is the third-highest in the history of the calendar year, behind former Pakistan player Mohammad Yousuf and West Indies legend Viv Richards.

Joe Root hit two double centuries and a further four centuries, including three consecutive Tests against India during England’s home series.

The 31-year-old, only the second Englishman to win the honor since Alistair Cook in 2011, said: “I am indescribably proud to receive this award.”

“I’m too smart to be in the same breath as many unparalleled players around the world and that means a huge amount.”

He added: “If there was a century that really sticks it would probably be against India in Chennai. The first Test match of that series (he scored 218 runs).

“With this being my 100th game, it’s something that will be remembered for a long time.”

England had a Terrible Year in Test cricket :-

In addition to Root’s personal achievements. England had a terrible year in Test cricket, winning just four of their 15 matches.

They lost the Ashes series in Australia, where Joe failed to record centuries and series against India and New Zealand.

India’s Smriti Mandhana was adjudged ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year by winning the Rachel Hehowe Flint Trophy.

He scored 855 runs in 22 international matches at an average of 38.86, including one century and five half-centuries.
