Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir, clearly Ishan Kishan is, and none other than, India’s first choice opener alongside Rohit Sharma in ODIs for the foreseeable future.

When Gambhir was asked who he would like to see as Rohit’s opening partner, he said –

“I am surprised that we are discussing this, because someone scored a double hundred in the last innings. The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who scored a double hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack could – especially at [their] home – should play.”

Gambhir said – “It has to be Ishan Kishan” as he was asked who he would like to see as Rohit’s opening partner

Kishan converted his maiden ODI hundred into a career-best 210 in their most recent tour in Bangladesh earlier this month. Now, with Shikhar Dhawan out of the ODI squad, Gambhir believes Kishan should be retained.

“He gets 200 in the 35th over? You don’t see anyone other than Ishan Kishan. He has to deliver long runs. He can also keep wickets, so he can do two things for you.”

“Me, that discussion should not happen. If someone else had scored a double century, I think we would have gone gaga over that person, but not with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about it. The other players. For me, that debate is over.”

Gambhir believes that Suryakumar can be an asset at No.4 –

Gambhir also believes that Suryakumar Yadav can be an asset at No.4, despite his 50-over record not being as impressive as his T20 numbers so far. In 16 ODIs, Suryakumar has scored 384 runs with only two fifties. In his most recent tour to New Zealand, he had scores of 4 and 6 in two of his three innings.
