Sanju Samson endured an off day with the bat and a mixed outing on the field during India’s series opener against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday. Samson fell cheaply and dropped a catch which failed to impress former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar said on air –

“And this time, it’s a leading edge to short third man. He is such a good player. Sanju Samson has a lot of talent but his shot selection lets him down at times. And this is one more occasion where it has disappointed .”

Throughout his career, a tale that has gone hand in hand with Samson is that he, time and again, as Gavaskar points out, fails to justify the immense amount of talent that he possesses.

Gavaskar questioned Sanju Samson –

Samson had faced just 5 balls when he went for the slog, mistimed Dhananjaya de Silva‘s shot and was caught for 5 runs. What makes the dismissal even more disappointing is that on the previous delivery, Samson got a lifeline later on.

Fielder grabs a chance in the deep. But instead of playing himself against the menace of the Sri Lankan attack, Samson continued with his approach and got lost, which led Gavaskar to question the 28-year-old India batsman.
