Mithali Dorai Raj is an Indian cricketer and the Test and ODI captain of the women’s national cricket team. She is a right-handed opening batswoman and occasional right-arm leg-break bowler. Raj is the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket.
Mithali Raj is the leading run-getter in Women ODI and also the only cricketer from India to play two-fifty overs World Cup final as captain (male or female).
Raj is arguably the most decorated women batter to ever grace the field from the country. Mithali has achieved plenty of galore while representing India at the highest level in her two-decade-long career. The only thing missing from Mithali’s long list of achievements is the tag of a World Cup winner and in pursuit of the same, she announced her retirement from the shortest format of the game in September 2019.
Mithali started playing cricket at the age of 10 and after 7 years she was part of the Indian team. In his very first One Day International match, he scored a century against Ireland. It was the year 1999 when Mithali played an unbeaten inning of 14 runs against Ireland.
Mithali Raj wanted to become a Bharat Natyam dancer as a child, but her father, who was an officer in the Air Force, encouraged her to play cricket. After that gradually she started moving in this direction. He is also fond of reading books. She is often seen reading a book in the dugout or pavilion during the match.
Raj has been one of the most successful captains of India. Under his captaincy, India made it to the final of the ICC World Cup twice. In 2005, India had to face defeat at the hands of Australia in the tournament hosted by South Africa, while it was defeated by the hosts in the World Cup title match held in England last year. In 2006, India won the Asia Cup under the captaincy of Mithali.
Mithali has played 220 ODI matches in her career. In this, he has scored 7391 runs at an average of 51.32, with the help of 7 centuries and 59 fifties. Apart from this, he has scored 699 runs in 12 Test matches at an average of 43.68 with 1 century and 4 fifties. Mithali’s performance in T20 International matches has been the best. In 89 international T20 matches, Mithali has scored 2364 runs at an average of 37.
