Josh Hazlewood is set to make a comeback in the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka next month after his Ashes were reduced to just one match due to a side strain.
However, he does not expect to be eligible to play in all of Australia’s matches in the coming months.
“There is no doubt that watching on TV with the rest of the country has been hopeless, but the boys have been excellent,” he said during the release of the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup in Sydney.

“Definitely a return to Sri Lankan T20s, with New Zealand not coming now can simplify it a bit, I got a couple of weeks to get right.”
He picked up a side injury at the Gabba on the third day of the first Ashes Test. After a recovery that took him longer than he needed, Hazlewood was on track to face New Zealand.
Hazlewood was one of the key players in Australia’s T20 World Cup victory last November, when he took 11 wickets in seven matches with an economy rate of 7.29, including 3 for 16 in the final against New Zealand.
Combined with success for 2021 IPL champions Chennai Super Kings, it created a lavish year in the pipeline for Hazlewood, who felt the benefits of playing regularly.
“I expected to play a part in the win for Australia and get a game here and there in the IPL, but for consecutive games, this change makes a huge difference,” he said.

“You learn a lot in each game, and they’re each a little different. It firmly went over what I thought was in the script, but I was sure to play my background quietly.”
Hazlewood is making a comeback to the IPL this year. But conceding that the ongoing COVID-19 containment will be an on-demand event with added challenges.
Australia is due to tour Pakistan in March to play in all formats and then tour Sri Lanka in the middle of the year.
Currently, there is also a brief T20I series in New Zealand in March, which the Pakistan players will be missing. Although this is unlikely to happen now given the border resistance.
“We’ve taken a look at the schedule and go through it, especially the multi-pronged ones, and I think it’s pretty much impossible for Australia to play all the games,” Josh said.
“We have to prioritize whether it’s a red ball over a white ball or vice versa, depending on how your body is traveling. As far as time away from home and bubble fatigue, there Will have to take some time, hope to come home for a week or two.”
