All preparations have been made to include the stop clock rule, which was introduced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on an experimental basis on December 3, 2023, in all the standard playing conditions of cricket and the stop clock rule will be implemented in the T20 World Cup to be held in June. It is almost certain to get approval during this period.

It will be implemented not only in T20I matches but also in ODIs :-

Also, let us tell you that electronic watch between overs will not only be implemented in T20I matches, but will also be implemented in ODIs. The primary goal of this rule is to ensure completion of matches on time.

What is stop clock rule?

According to the stop clock rule introduced by the ICC, the fielding team will get 60 seconds between overs, during which they must start the next over before the countdown reaches zero. This 60 second countdown will happen between every over of T20I or ODIs and failing to do so may result in huge losses for the fielding team.

Third umpire will start the timer :-

It is the responsibility of the umpires to enforce this rule and the third umpire will start the timer. According to this rule, the field umpire will give a warning to the fielding team for breaking this rule for the first two times and for the third or subsequent time, a penalty of 5 runs will be imposed on the fielding team.

The decision to use the timer depends on the umpires, who also have the authority to decide whether the delay is caused by the batsmen, a DRS call or any unexpected circumstances.

Its approval was given in the ongoing ICC meetings in Dubai :-

The testing period of this rule, which was started on an experimental basis in December 2023, was going to end in April, but in the meantime, it is believed that in the ongoing ICC meetings in Dubai, the ICC and its Cricket Committee saw many merits in making the rule permanent. And it was approved to be made permanent.
