IND vs ENG, 5th Test: Devdutt Padikkal created history by batting at number four

Young batsman Devdutt Padikkal has also joined the list of players who have received praise for their performance during the ongoing Test series against England. Devdutt Padikkal scored a half-century on the second day of the fifth Test match between India and England in Dharamsala.

However, he could not convert his fifty into a big innings and returned to the pavilion after scoring 65 runs. However, while batting at number four, Devdutt Padikkal has achieved a big achievement.

Made a partnership of 97 runs with Sarfaraz :-

Left-handed batsman Devdutt Padikkal has got a chance to play in the last test in place of Rajat Patidar. Devdutt came out to bat when captain Rohit Sharma was out after scoring 103 runs. After some time, Gill (110) was also out. Devdutt along with Sarfaraz put India in a strong position by making a partnership of 97 runs. Devdutt Padikkal came to bat in the debut match at number four, this number has been batted by Indian legends Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar for a long time.

First Indian to debut at number four since 1988 :-

Devdutt Padikkal is the first Indian to bat at this position on Test debut since WV Raman in 1988. Raman batted at number four in the first innings of his first Test match against West Indies in Chennai. Before Padikkal, only eight Indian batsmen – CK Nayudu, Vijay Hazare, Hemu Adhikari, Ramnath Kenny, Apoorva Sengupta, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Gundappa Vishwanath and Raman – had batted at number four in their debut Test.

Second best score of an Indian batsman in debut innings :-

Batting at number four in the debut match, Padikkal scored 65 runs in his first innings, which is the second best score by an Indian batsman in the debut innings at number four. Earlier, Vishwanath had scored 137 runs against Australia in Kanpur (1969).
