This isn’t the first time these two cricketing giants will lock horns in a T20 World Cup knockout match. Let’s rewind the clock and revisit some unforgettable encounters that have shaped this historic rivalry.
Remember the iconic six sixes of Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 T20 World Cup against Australia? Well, India faced England before that epic final, and it was another memorable contest. Batting first, India piled up a massive 188 runs, thanks to a scorching 30-ball 70 from Yuvraj Singh and a crucial 18-ball 30 from MS Dhoni. Despite a valiant effort from Matthew Hayden (62) and Andrew Symonds (43), England fell short by 15 runs, paving the way for India’s eventual World Cup triumph.
Seven years later, in the 2014 edition, India and England clashed again in the group stage. This time, it was the young Virat Kohli who stole the show. Chasing a target of 173 set by South Africa, Kohli displayed his now-famous chase master skills, scoring an unbeaten 72 off just 44 balls. His knock, laced with five boundaries and two sixes, helped India secure a thrilling victory with five balls to spare. However, India’s journey ended in the final against Sri Lanka.
The encounters in 2016 and 2022 were heartbreakers for Indian fans. In 2016, despite a brilliant 89 from Kohli, India’s bowlers couldn’t contain the explosive batting of Lendl Simmons and Andre Russell, who chased down a target of 193 with two balls remaining. The story repeated itself in 2022, where a timid batting display by the Indian top-order resulted in a below-par score of 168. Openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales of England then displayed a masterclass in domination, stitching together a match-winning 170-run partnership to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
