Indian opener Shafali Verma’s best all-round performance, Bangladesh’s crushing defeat in Asia Cup

In the Women’s Asia Cup 2022, on 8 October, India defeated Bangladesh by 59 runs to register their fourth win in 5 matches and secure their place in the semi-finals. Playing first, the Indian team had scored 159/5 in 20 overs, in response to which Bangladesh team could only score 100/7. Shafali Verma (44 balls 55 and 2/10) was adjudged Player of the Match for her excellent all-round performance.

India won the toss and elected to bat first and Shafali Verma shared a tremendous partnership of 96 runs. For the first wicket with Smriti Mandhana (38 balls 47) for the first wicket. Although India suffered constant setbacks in the middle overs. Jemima Rodrigues played a quick innings of 35 runs in 24 balls to take the team past 150. Rumana Ahmed took the highest three wickets for Bangladesh.

Apart from Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma also took two wickets.

In response to the target, Bangladesh got off to a good start but it was also very slow. The first wicket fell for 45 in the 10th over and after that the hosts were completely out of the match. Bangladesh scored just 100 runs in 20 overs. Captain Nigar Sultana scored the highest 36 runs. Apart from Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma also took two wickets for India.

In another match today, Sri Lanka beat Malaysia by 72 runs. Playing first, Sri Lanka scored 105/7 in 20 overs. In response to which Malaysia bundled out for just 33 runs in 9.5 overs. Malsha Shehani adjudged Player of the Match for taking 4 wickets for just 2 runs.

India’s next match will be against Thailand on October 10

On October 9, Pakistan will face UAE and Malaysia will face Thailand. India’s next match will be against Thailand on October 10.

Currently, India is at the first, Pakistan second, Sri Lanka third, Bangladesh fourth and Thailand fifth in the points table. The teams of UAE (6th) and Malaysia (7th) have been eliminated from the race for the semi-finals.
