O’Brien took to his official Twitter handle and issued a statement about what he called a day off from top-level cricket for Ireland.

O’Brien was part of the historic match where Ireland defeated Pakistan and entered the second round of the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

Subsequently, in 2011, he played the best innings of an Irish batsman during the World Cup. At the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, he scored 113 runs in 63 balls.

One of the four Irish batsmen to score a century in the World Cup:-

The right-handed batsman is one of four Irish batsmen to score a century in the 50-over World Cup. The other three are William Porterfield, Ed Joyce, and Paul Stirling. In 2018, O’Brien was also a part of Ireland’s first Test match against Pakistan in Dublin.

The veteran last donned the national jersey in a T20I against Namibia in the T20 World Cup 2021 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Back in 2019, he also played a Test match against England at the prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

The 4 centuries and 24 half-centuries in T20 Internationals:-

O’Brien scored 258, 3619, and 1973 runs in three Tests, 153 ODIs, and 110 T20 Internationals with the help of four centuries and 24 half-centuries respectively.

Apart from his batting, O’Brien was also an easy medium-pace bowler. He took 172 wickets including six four-wicket hauls to show his efforts.
