England’s star opener Jason Roy has made up his mind to take part in the inaugural season of America’s Major Cricket League. MLC will start from 13th July and will end on 30th July. Jason Roy is currently in talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board to release his contract.

The ECB contract pays around £66,000 per year :-

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Roy’s England teammate Reece Topley is also looking to make a similar move to franchise cricket. However, Reece’s decision will depend on the level of his shoulder surgery, which he underwent last month.

The ECB contract fetches around £66,000 per year and is one of the boards that pay cricketers the highest. Harry Brook, Dawid Malan, Matthew Potts, Roy Topley and David Willey are the players who have got such deals in the 2022-23 contract cycle.

What is special in MLC :-

The MLC will debut on July 13 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. IPL and Australia’s franchises are included in this tournament. Roy is almost certain to play for the LA Knight Riders but will have to break his national contract to play in the MLC.

Notably, the inaugural edition of the MLC will clash with the semi-finals and final of the English tournament T20 Blast. There is some concern in England that the expansion of the MLC will affect The Hundred in the future. ECB may not provide NOC to contracted players who appear in MLC.

How does the England contract work?

The England contract runs from October to September. If a player is to be released from his contract, he may have to pay around £20,000. At the same time, the salary cap of each MLC franchise is around 93,000 pounds, in which it will contract with 16 to 19 players. It includes 9 foreign players.

What did Jason Roy say :-

Roy was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2023 and will feature for LA Knight Riders in MLC. Topley hasn’t signed a contract yet, but has a strong chance of playing in the league.

Jason Roy was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo, “When I was young and you asked then I would have said that I would love to play 100 Tests for my country. Now if you ask me, I would say that I would love to play as many IPL seasons as possible. I don’t think you should shy away from making your choices and there is nothing wrong with being successful in white-ball cricket.
